Rising and Sinking in Resonance: Mass Distribution Critically Affects Buoyancy-Driven Spheres via Rotational Dynamics

چکیده
We present experimental results for spherical particles rising and settling in a still fluid. Imposing well-controlled center of mass offset enables us to vary the rotational dynamics selectively by introducing an intrinsic timescale problem. Results are highly sensitive even small degrees offset, rendering this practically relevant parameter itself. further find that, certain ratio vortex shedding (capturing Froude-type similarity), resonance phenomenon sets in. Even though is effect origin, it also strongly affects translational oscillation frequency amplitude, most importantly, drag coefficient. This observation equally applies both heavy light spheres, albeit with slightly different characteristics which we offer explanation. Our findings highlight need consider parameters when trying understand classify path properties spheres.

Event-driven Brownian dynamics for hard spheres.
Brownian dynamics algorithms integrate Langevin equations numerically and allow to probe long time scales in simulations. A common requirement for such algorithms is that interactions in the system should vary little during an integration time step; therefore, computational efficiency worsens as the interactions become steeper. In the extreme case of hard-body interactions, standard numerical i...
متن کاملRising stars and sinking ships: consequences of status momentum.
Differences in rank are a ubiquitous feature of social life. Moving beyond the traditional static view of social hierarchy, five studies spanning multiple contexts examined how intertemporal changes in rank influenced people's status judgments. When final rank was held constant, people, products, and institutions were judged as higher status when they had arrived at this position by ascending, ...
متن کاملWake-Driven Dynamics of Finite-Sized Buoyant Spheres in Turbulence.
Particles suspended in turbulent flows are affected by the turbulence and at the same time act back on the flow. The resulting coupling can give rise to rich variability in their dynamics. Here we report experimental results from an investigation of finite-sized buoyant spheres in turbulence. We find that even a marginal reduction in the particle's density from that of the fluid can result in s...
متن کاملConvection driven by centrifugal buoyancy in nematics
The onset of thermal convection in a nematic contained in a vertical rotating cylindrical annulus heated from the outside is studied as a function of the planar alignment of the liquid crystal director n. When n is horizontal, the results confirm data on gravitational buoyancy. An original first order like convection mode is obtained when n is parallel to the cylinder axis. Thermal convection i...
متن کاملForward Kinematics Analysis and Tension Distribution of a Cable-Driven Sinking Winches Mechanism
This paper concerns the forward kinematics and tension distribution of sinking winches mechanism, which is a type of four-cable-driven partly constrained parallel robot. Conventional studies on forward kinematics of cable-driven parallel robot assumed that all cables are taut. Actually, given the lengths of four cables, some cables may be slack when the platform is in static equilibrium. Theref...
